Video: How to Work Effectively with an Interpreter

Transcript
Hi, I’m Lewis. I’m the Partnership Coordinator here at Clear Voice and I’m going to tell you a little bit more about our services and the best way to interact with our interpreters.

Firstly, introduce yourself to the interpreter and provide any context that might be helpful.
Allow the interpreter to introduce themselves to your service user and be prepared that some introductions take longer in different cultures and languages.

Remember that your conversation is with your service user rather than the interpreter, so when addressing the service user please remember to use the first person.

For example, if you wanted to know your service user’s name you would ask them directly ‘What is your name?’ and then allow the interpreter to converse with the service user before delivering the message back to you in English.

Minimise the use of slang and complicated phrases as this could confuse things for our interpreters and make the interaction slightly more difficult.

Use short sentences and speak at a reasonable pace. This will allow the conversation to flow. And please allow the interpreter to finish what they’re saying before moving on to the next question.

If your service user had a particularly positive experience with a specific interpreter, please feel free to let us know and we’ll do our best to connect them with the same interpreter next time.

We’re always happy to receive your feedback and particularly happy to hear any positive stories that you may have from calls or videos or face-to-face appointments. So please do get in touch and let us know how they went.
